Our favourite Oscar Wilde quotes
For almost 200 years, L’Hotel has been the place to be seen in Paris. We’ve welcomed the likes of Salvador Dali, Princess Grace, Frank Sinatra and Elizabeth Taylor over the course of the last century, but our most prominent resident has to be the late Oscar Wilde. The poet took up residence in the hotel at the end of the 19th century and lived at L'Hotel until his death, famously claiming to 'live above his means'.
During his time in Paris, the hotel was known as Hotel d’Alsace and one of our favourite little nuggets of wit comes from Wilde’s last words in the hotel before he passed away.
“This wallpaper and I are fighting a duel to the death. Either it goes or I do.”
Now, a lot has changed since Wilde’s time in the hotel and we’re pretty sure that you’ll find our current wallpaper is to die for. In fact, our interior design was overhauled by Jacques Garcia, going on to receive a number of accolades and awards.
“I have the simplest tastes. I am always satisfied with the best.”

“Education is an admirable thing, but it is well to remember from time to time that nothing that is worth knowing can be taught.”
We’re firm believers that every day is an opportunity to explore. Curiosity is in our name, so we like to encourage everyone who stays with us to get out and explore. From Parisian history to the local culture, there’s plenty to immerse yourself in and experience.
“I can resist everything except temptation.”
Our opulent bar captures the charm and discreet glamour of the Left Bank. It's a favourite haunt of artists, film stars and hip locals. Give in to temptation during your stay with us and explore Parisian culture by indulging in some cocktails in Le Bar or treat yourself to some time in our hammam pool and steam room.
“There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about.”
